people writing software who don't know the fundamentals have no way of gauging how expensive anything is, or why it is that expensive. so they won't know how to optimise. and when their abstractions leak, as all abstractions inevitably do, they won't know why, or how to deal with that.
also, if you're driving at 200km/h, you had better understand the fundamentals of how cars work, at least. and yes, how engines, gears, etc work. otherwise you're an unsafe, irresponsible fool in danger of making a run for a Darwin award.

@julian @pixelschubsi I understand the instinct of wanting to reuse the parts you already have. Protocol parsing, identities, profiles etc. However those will very quickly become extremely minor building blocks in the complexity of instant messaging.
It's very easy to underestimate the scope and feature creep of IM. I've seen this happening in other places where people initially think that IM is just passing some messages around. And then users demand more features and then you reinvent XMPP.
