“By reading this plaque, you have made a valuable addition to the number of people who have read this plaque” … an important heritage moment on the streets of Toronto (by artist Sarah Lazarovic).

A commemorative plaque titled "The Toronto Recursive History Project of Toronto's Recursive History," situated in a garden area. The plaque has text explaining its significance, stating it was commemorated on October 10, 2018, and states that by reading this plaque, you have made a valuable addition to the number of people who have read this plaque. To this day and up to the end of this sentence, this plaque continues to be read by people like yourself.

Progress from today! We now have a train station, rails, electric poles, a river and more!

A top down pixel art view showing the current progress in creating a seaside town area. The location features a few houses, some with an accessible roof, a Laboratory with a greenhouse structure attached and a tree house. To the north-east there are rocky cliffs and a cave that leads up into the promontory. In the southeast, just below the rocks, a sandy beach leading to a bay area. A few npcs are starting to populate the location, exploring the surroundings and having a chat.

To the south-west, an open-air train station, with two railway platforms and two modern looking canopys. To the east along the railroad, many light poles can be seen. To the south-east a single house with a green car is located in the middle of a plateau overseeing the Bay area.

@stux My Mother had radical surgery on one leg, lived in an iron lung, and spent the rest of her life disabled. And because of the disability, she was unable to exercise and died in her 70s. But when the polio vaccine came out, she whipped her kids in to get as fast as she could. And none of her kids got polio. Imagine telling her she should avoid vaccinating her kids.

Little girl pointing to her mother saying "What's that mark on your arm, Mama?"
Mother: "It's my smallpox vaccine scar."
Girl: "Why don't I have one?"
Mother: "Because it worked."

Probably a smarter way to do this, but here ya go. Full transcribed in the alt text.

Hello, council. My name is Jackie McGuire. I'm a Marana resident. I am also an AI data center and cybersecurity expert and research analyst. For the first 15 years of my career, I was an economist and a securities broker and registered investment advisor. One thing I find curious that Beale hasn't mentioned is that they're a subsidiary of a company called Blue Owl. They are publicly traded. O-W-L, Blue Owl is currently involved in a class action lawsuit for securities fraud for making material misstatements about their liquidity and the status of their financials. So let's start with that. Now let's talk about the AI bubble. We're talking about two potentially 750 megawatt data centers. The cost to construct and then put the components in those data centers will be approximately $120 billion. This is being funded primarily with private equity and debt that's being hidden from public company balance sheets from companies like Meta, Amazon, Google and OpenAI. The result of this is that these things do not show up as debt on those public companies' balance sheets. They show up as equity assets. We have no way of really knowing how much debt exists. The chips that go into these data centers last approximately 18 to 24 months, although they're depreciated over five years. This is kind of like painting the Golden Gate Bridge, which means that as soon as you're done installing all of those racks, you go back to the beginning and you begin upgrading those racks, creating billions of dollars worth of e-waste that this community will have to figure out how to service. And that's on top of the interest alone for the loans to build these data centers. This is a financially unsustainable project. I have been a resident of this town for almost 15 years. I had my children here. I'm raising my children here. The town has done a phenomenal job of creating public spaces where people want to come out of their houses and socialize. I do not want an eyesore that by the end of 2029 will end up as an empty building with no consumers for that capital, with no way to fund the debt that has been taken on to construct this data center. And for what it's worth, I make a living on cloud computing. This AI bubble bursting is going to materially impact my ability to pay my mortgage, and I will have to pivot. I don't want that for the entire town of Marana. This is a terrible idea, and I'll be back next time to talk more about the actual components. Thank you.

@Photo55 Planetary GNP is on the order of $80-100Tn/year. So this means up to 1.5% of the global economic product will evaporate if the bubble bursts right now. But there's a lot more 2nd-order activity hanging on it, eg. construction, manufacturing. I expect the AI bubble to trigger a full-scale global depression when it pops, not just a US one. 1929 all over again. Or even 1873/1893.

Holy crap what a stat

'Between 2001 and 2014, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan cost the US an estimated $1.5 trillion to $1.7 trillion in direct spending. Global AI spending, according to Gartner, is forecast to reach nearly $1.5 trillion this year, putting today's AI boom in the same cash-burning league as two major wars.'

@pier reminder that Sam "used-ai-salesman" Altman was non-ironically mentioning building a fscking Dyson Sphere to power "AI".

It is all so dumb it hurts.

To avoid scope creep, start all projects with the largest possible scope.

Economics: "Humans only value things monetarily." Sociology: "Uh, I don't..." Economics: "Humans are always rational and value is calculated by complex internal calculus." Sociology: "Uhhh, Psy, can you help?" Psychology: "That's not how humans..." Economics: "ALSO MY SYSTEM WILL GROW EXPONENTIALLY FOREVER!!" Physics: *drops teacup*

@datenwolf the market for cheap, compact cameras from well known brands is dead, yes.

You can either get a crappy chinese 'scamera' or get something decent.

I might not like it all that much, but I kinda understand how that's happening and don't think it's the end of the world.

@datenwolf well, there's still the whole "bridge camera" thing that's still sold.

those are not exactly cheap, but some still somewhat resemble the form factor of previous generic compact cameras.

like Sonys RX100 line?

A tumblr post; "I am shocked at how many people don't have an actively hostile relationship with advertising.

I am skipping your ads as fast as I can. I'm skipping past your sponsor read. I'm muting the TV. I'm muting the tab. If they get too annoying I will simply stop trying to watch.

If advertisers can use every manipulative trick in the book to get me to buy their product, I am fully within my rights to do everything I can on my end to make their job impossible."
