Mockingbird Sunset

A northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) perches on a powerline, clutching a freshly caught grasshopper in its beak. I captured the moment at dusk, which bathed the scene in a rich orange glow. The bird is nearly silhouetted against the sky—just enough detail remains to hint at its textures and form. I’m pleased with how it turned out; there’s something quietly dramatic about the balance of light, life, and timing.

"A northern mockingbird perches confidently on a slender wire, silhouetted against a glowing sunset sky that fades from golden yellow to deep orange. The bird’s posture is alert and purposeful—its beak firmly clutches a grasshopper, legs dangling midair in a frozen moment of nature’s drama. The mockingbird’s plumage, though muted in the fading light, reveals subtle textures of gray, white, and black, etched with precision. The wire beneath it slices horizontally across the scene, anchoring the composition in quiet simplicity. Behind the bird, the sky is a smooth canvas of warmth, casting the entire moment in a serene yet primal glow. The image is signed “© Swede's Photographs” in the bottom right corner, a gentle nod to the artist’s eye." - Copilot

Bird’s Morning Call

I get all kinds of complaints in my backyard—this one voiced by a bird nestled in the grass. I’m not entirely sure of the species, but my best guess is a house sparrow.

"A small bird stands in a patch of lush green grass, its beak wide open in mid-call—whether it’s singing, scolding, or simply announcing its presence is anyone’s guess. Its plumage is mostly brown, with subtle reddish tones on the wings that catch the light. The bird’s head is tilted slightly to one side, giving it a curious, animated expression, as if it’s reacting to something just out of frame. The grass is vibrant and healthy, suggesting a sunny day and a well-tended yard. The moment feels candid and full of personality—like a snapshot of backyard drama in progress." - Copilot

Jetzt in jedem 7ten Ei.

Every structure at Petra, in Jordan, was carved out of the solid rock of the cliffs. Every perfect column. All the intricate details, all of the complex, symmetrical geometry, carved without modern tools or measuring devices, over 2000 years ago. Petra is contained within a valley and its side canyons. In the center of the valley are the remains of a Roman ruin, built by stacking rocks, that pales in comparison.

A massive tomb with two levels, multiple rooms, 16 colomns, and intricate, geometrically complex roof, perfectly carved out of solid sandstone. Several people walk or stand in front of it for scale.

Good morning. ☕☕☕

27 July 2025

I need to pull myself out of this stupor. I haven’t done much in a week—just mowed the grass, and that’s about it. I just added a new item to my to-do list: “Pull myself out of this stupor tomorrow.” There. That should do it.

I’m running late. Charlie’s here, nudging me about mealtime, and I’m only now easing into my morning ramble.

The closet door’s ajar, and my eyes just landed on a short-sleeve poplin shirt—the only piece I still have from my days as a Marine. I wonder what size it is. Small, maybe. Medium at best. It’s well over 50 years old and has migrated from closet to closet more times than I can count, never worn. I couldn’t wear it now even if I wanted to. I’ve graduated in size a couple of times since then. Hmm... why have I held onto it all these years?

“The funny thing about these uniforms is that you hang them in the closet and they get smaller and smaller.” — Curt Flood

Steel Giants at Sunset

"A blazing sunset spills across the Savannah River, painting the sky in molten gold, deep orange, and dusky purple. The sun itself is partially veiled by scattered clouds, which stretch like brushstrokes across the horizon, catching the light and adding texture to the heavens. In the foreground, a row of towering industrial cranes—likely from the Garden City Terminal—stand in stark silhouette. Their angular arms and skeletal frames reach skyward, dark and unmoving, like giant steel creatures frozen in contemplation.

From the deck of a riverboat, the view feels both intimate and immense. The cranes, though massive, are dwarfed by the sky’s vastness. Their presence against the glowing canvas evokes a quiet humility—a reminder of how small we are in the grand choreography of earth, sky, and time. The river itself is unseen but implied, a silent witness to this fleeting moment of light and shadow." - Authored by Swede (photographer) and Copilot (AI)
