The activity of the workers in a small artisanal foundry of aluminium (Madagascar). From the heart of Madagascar’s highlands comes a craft both timeless and essential. In this part of the country, small artisanal foundries turn recycled aluminum from cans, scrap metal and bolts into pots, pans and decorative pieces like lemurs, zebus and baobabs. Artisans melt aluminum in brick furnaces heated by charcoal, pour it into hand-carved sand molds and polish each piece to a brilliant shine. This tradition began over a century ago when aluminum has been introduced to the town after World War I. This legacy continues today in family-run workshops. Pretty little criminal 😬

This rather lovely fly was hanging out on the lavender bush this evening – I think it's a Physocephala rufipes, although as ever, I'm not really an expert 🤷‍♂️

But it's also dangerous, at least if you're a bumblebee – it lays its eggs in them & its larvae develop inside, killing the bee ☹️

Lightning Spider

On June 22, during the thunderstorms that passed over Germany, I was fortunate enough to photograph this massive lightning discharge. I thought it looked like a spider, and then discovered that it is, in fact, called spider lightning.

Instead of striking the ground, this spider-like lightning arcs from a central point in all directions along the cloud cover. While most of the bolts do not fork much, one going to the left looks like a finely branched tree.

Sunset clouds riot in cotton-candy colours of lavender and rose against a sky paling from lightest pink to a deeper, nearly hot pink towards the horizon. In the centre, a small forested island stands out blackly against the sky; below, the clouds and island reflect in a lake shimmering with wind, distorting the reflection slightly.

Wassertropfen auf der Frontscheibe in einer Waschanlage: Lichter und Farben sind verschwommen und bilden ein abstraktes Muster. Es ist grade noch so zu erkennen, das man in einem Gebäude ist. Drops of water on the windscreen in a car wash: lights and colours are blurred and form an abstract pattern. You can just about make out that you are in a building.
