I think the only valid objection *could* be the subjective nature of determining the winner, but that would also rule out gymnastics, diving, figure skating and synchronized swimming.

But those ARE commonly accepted as sport, jokes about French Figure Skating judges, aside.

I think it's missnamed. The actual sport in cheerleading is acrobatics, and pretty spectacular acrobatics at that. The fact that it's mostly seen as something to support and cheer for other sports, instead of being treated and cheered as a sport in its own right, is really sad and unjust.
