I prefer the microwave for making tea. I put the tea in a mug of cold water and microwave everything until boiling. I have a kettle on the kitchen counter to allay suspicion but the kettle has not worked since 2011.

@jellycrystals @fesshole the source of hot water doesn't matter the slightest - microwave might be slightly less efficient and harder to control for the perfect temperature, but otherwise this should be fine.
But knowing that doesn't keep me from thinking people who use a microwave to cook water are somewhat unhinged.
Starting tea in cold water isn't fine though.
