An old laptop that refuses to give video on any of its outputs while the integrated screen is attached?

I think you mean "headless low-power server"

(I will 3D-print an actual case for it now that I know the issue)

The mainboard from a disassembled laptop, with several cables plugged into it, and a blue status light shining.

@ace This is the Lockpicking Lawyer and today we're gonna show you how to use a bit of tension between the VGA and RJ45 connectors to pick a motherboard from a laptop.

@zhenech Amusingly enough, the only thing keeping the motherboard in place inside the case of the laptop when opened was a single screw in one corner, and the 3.5mm stereo jack in the other.

@ace did that too with my first ever notebook (Siemens Nixdorf "510 AGP" - pre-Fujitsu, back when "AGP" was a feature important enough to become part of the product name) back in the days

but that one was HARD to disassemble

They built them like tanks back then.

@dat I think my first laptop - a "Best 5530CD" if I remember correctly - was equally tank-like in its construction.

And that thing was awesome enough to not only have 30MHz of CPU power, it even had an integrated CD-drive.
I later upgraded to a 5560CD, which doubled the CPU while remaining equally brick-like in both shape, weight, and solidity.
