This is an amazing idea for a tool-assisted speedrun: swap the cartridge between bytes of the currently executing instruction.

@foone A less extreme version of this is an alternative way to unlock the Sonic 3 level select (the official way is extremely difficult because of tight timing and the game doesn't check for inputs on every single frame).

AFAIK, Sonic 2 and 3 share the same RAM byte location for "level select unlocked". So doing Sonic 2's level select, resetting, ripping out the cart (I think on the level select screen), and the swapping with Sonic 3 will retain the "level select unlocked" bit.

well okay… then you "beat" the game by swapping it out for another game?

So I can finally beat someone at chess, by just doing the right dice throw?

this is some kind of stupid

@foone My brain hurts every time he pronounces NES like "ness".

Also, get off my lawn

@dave_cochran nope! This is emulation only.

Unless you open a NES, cut the clock line to the 6502, fit a toggle switch and push-to-make. Toggle closed to boot, toggle open, hit reset, push-to-make stepping through cycles and swapping carts as necessary until you re-insert the Mario cart then toggle close to victory.
