I am obsessively proud of the collection of cables I have built up over the years. Sometimes I will just stare at the box I keep them in, thinking how handy some of them would be in certain situations. These situations have never come up

@fesshole There was a Purging of the Cables a couple of years ago, and just a month ago I needed one of the ones we'd "never need" because it was an "obsolete connector". Had to buy one at the second hand shop.

I feel like Mastodon-ites either have 3 or 4 boxes or literally none. And if they need a cable they fashion it themselves by weaving electrons and copper from the ether.

@fesshole I purged mine when I moved five years ago, but my new crop is coming along nicely. It's already filled a desk drawer to overflowing and is showing no signs of slowing down.

I think the trick is you have to keep them away from the light.

@fesshole In the top drawer of the filling cabinet are parallel, serial, PCMCIA cables (and cards), and some of the most unusual and niche shit known to exist.
Has it ever come in useful? Definitely, about once every 6 or so years family / friends will ask. Unfortunately there are so many boxes in the way, getting to it is beyond my energy levels and almost the whole room is unsuitable for anyone on crutches.
