I gave Windows 3.11 a dark mode. It's practically a modern OS now.

Windows 3.11 running in DOSBox-X. Mostly black windows with grey title bars and maroon highlights. Blue and purple zig-zag wallpaper.

@BasementDweller3000 tbf Win 3.1 was better themeable than modern OSes, because there were near no alternate GUI-Toolkits and nobody did that "let's build GUI out of image snippets and large backgrounds" shit.

@dat @BasementDweller3000 Real problems with themes started after Windows 8 release; before most things used OS widgets (and even 3rd party toolkits, such as GTK+ and Qt, at least had an option to use the OS theme). 8 brought "modern" apps, Electron was released around the same time (CEF was earlier, though I don't remember anything using it for the whole UI at the time), and a lot of development shifted to just running webpages inside Electron apps.

@jernej__s @BasementDweller3000 nah, problems began earlier

there was the whole java debacle from end of the 90s on

and enterprise-apps did the whole "we have our own crappy inhouse GUI-Toolkit" from like the mid 2000s

and with XP came rounded corners and gradients - and people build that with images

it's long been broken
