Sometimes I wish I wasn't a retrotech reverse engineer.

Because see, if you're not one, you get to live 2025 without any chance of having to ever think about fucking MFC

@foone 0 days since I recoiled in terror by remembering MFC exists

Thanks

@foone IRetroTechReverseEngineer3

@foone Some parts of Blizzard were still using MFC back in 2018, and I have every reason to believe they're still using it today. Sometimes live-service games run for 20 years, and if it ain't broke you don't fix it.

@foone honestly the Fractal MFC 101 looks entirely up your alley

@foone My heart goes out to you every time you post that acurséd abbreviation

@foone well yeah I mean it was awful.... But then there was always MAPI with it's thunks saying "hold my beer"

I google "how do keyboard shortcuts work in MFC" and the little AI summary is like "foone, foone... It's 2025. You don't need to think about MFC. You're free. We're all free."

The best thing about being into retrotech is the 90s never ended.

The worst thing about being into retrotech is that the 90s never ended.

This also applies to other decades, of course. I spend most of my time in the 90s but you can retrotech into the 80s, 70s, or even 00s.

Windows XP is now older than the entire PC architecture was when Windows XP came out, after all.

@foone foone stop, you're going to make me crumble into dust

I should make a list of things that happened in the "first half" of the PC's history.

Warcraft (III), Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Prince of Persia (The Sands of Time), Grand Theft Auto (Vice City), Dark Forces (Jedi Outcast), C#/.NET, Firefox (aka Phoenix/Firebird), Steam, BitTorrent.

All are closer to the August 1981 release of the original IBM 5150 PC than today.

@foone good Lord.

@foone
What makes me feel bad about this isn't that it was so long ago, it's that it's been nearly 25 years since we had a livable version of Windows.

@foone “Thanks for this information” I say, as I crumble to dust.

@foone last year I had the 20 year anniversary of Steam account. I feel old. (That's not even my oldest account out there, not by a long shot)

@foone fuck

@sif good choice, yes.

@foone Blocked. Reported for abuse 😤😮‍💨

@foone I don't like this

@foone YouTube turned 20 recently

@foone 😐 Most of those games are still on my "haven't gotten around to play yet" list. I played GTA 1 & Warcraft 2 though!

@foone Worst? I dunno, "electrolytic caps" is at least a strong contender.

@foone golly. I didn't want to feel old this early in the morning 😱

@foone … Starting with the release of the Apple Macintosh! (Which was influential enough that the original PC is now extinct—all subsequent personal computers for the next 23 yers aped the Mac style of user interaction, and when they adopted a new paradigm thereafter it was another Apple imitation—the multitouch iOS style UI.)

@foone Fuck.

Made some visual reminders for Other Sites

A dialog box from The Elder Scrolls Morrowind, saying:
"The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
came out closer to the release
of the IBM PC in 1981 than to
today. "

A Windows XP message box, saying:
"Windows XP came out closer to the release of the original IBM PC in 1981 than today!"
It's placed over the XP "Bliss" background, and the titlebard says "It was before 9/11!"

Windows XP is now older than DOS was when Windows XP came out

@foone And Microsoft has yet to release a better OS

@foone but OpenMW doesn't need MFC!!! :-D

An MS-DOS boot screen, showing:
"type TRUTH.TXT

Windows XP is now older than DOS was when XP came out."

@foone jesus christ

@foone And the libraries at Madrid metro subways still use it.

@dat yeah because only a madman would use MFC for video games!

*sigh*

@foone you probably can drop "…for video games"?

@foone lies! blasphemy!

@foone@digipres.club but foone what's wrong with microsoft foundation class library neodog_googly

this whole thread is me procrastinating looking up how keyboard shortcuts in MFC, btw

@foone@digipres.club just use Borland's OWL instead

@puppygirlhornypost2 I'm a reverse engineer: I don't get to pick what software from 1996 used

@foone Microsoft Windows Vista is now older than Microsoft Windows Vista when Microsoft Windows Vista came out

@foone *everyone disliked this*

@ann3nova who are you who are so wise in ways of science?

@foone why must you do this to us

@foone

Fun fact: Windows XP was the last version of windows, I voluntarily used. It also was the last version, that I installed on any computer.

@foone I believe that is only true when you define PC architecture as *IBM PC architecture*. Which means you skip a few years of personal computers preceding the IBM PC.

@foone and still the best of I ever used

@foone seems rude and personal for you to post this

💀

@foone

A: it’s part of why my retro fetish ends at the win threshold. Plenty of 8 bit fun to be had. No mfc.

B: I think McCarthy’ Dynamics of Software Development mentions how/why they created mfc. First generation of c++ (like Microsoft c v6?) got low adoption, with random excuses. They added mfc and app/messaging/etc templates to ease devs into it, and thus Visual C++ was born.

@foone @puppygirlhornypost2 have you considered using a different calendar?

@shironeko @puppygirlhornypost2 of course, I'm a pope! Making up calendars is one of my main jobs.

@foone Windows XP did 9/11

@foone I think I just took psychic damage
