I've always given my kid Linux PCs and while this has all sorts of educational benefits, the main advantage is that it's really easy to remotely log in and reduce their system volume.

@fesshole you expect us to believe the sound works?

@fesshole Sound drivers and Linux? Ha! (Dear Linux people. This is a joke)

@fesshole SSHush!

@fesshole yeah I bet you do it over the wifi, which also works

@fesshole Speakers? I thought this was about reducting their `/home` filesystem.

@fesshole they figured out how to get audio to work on their Linux machine?!

@fesshole Wait, you can do that over ssh?

@fesshole

The joke will be on him when the kid(s) presented with a Linux problem researches it and finds solutions the parent hadn't even thought about.

It's why those of us who grew up dealing with the Blue Screen of Death were always more knowledgeable about systems than the typical "Always just worked" Apple crowd.

Anyone want to bet that the kid figures out how to boot into a live USB drive before high school?

@fesshole finally, a fess that could only come from Mastodon

@fesshole

Extra bonus: no worries about having them install unwanted apps/games. Because there aren't any.

(And say that sincerely, I gave a Linux laptop to my daughter specifically for that reason)

@fesshole Also - fewer viruses, and if they get tricked by one of those IT Support scammers the scammers won’t have a clue
