Life on the Mudflats "This image beautifully captures the lively scene of three dunlins (Calidris alpina) on mudflats at low tide, gathered around a shimmering tidal pool. The dunlin on the right is mid-flight, its wings spread wide, displaying delicate feather patterns, while its legs dangle slightly beneath it. The middle dunlin is in motion, its tiny legs kicking up droplets as it runs through the water, creating gentle ripples in the pool. On the left, a third dunlin stands still, balancing gracefully on one leg, its beak tucked back into its wing as it nestles in for warmth, a striking contrast to the action unfolding nearby. The tidal pool itself acts like a mirror, capturing fleeting reflections of each bird. The dunlin in flight has its distorted reflection rippling beneath it, a faint echo of its wings touching the surface. The causeway to St Michael's Mount is completely under water at high tide, but people walk and drive accross at low tide.

This is the change over moment.

People have walked over and have not made it back before the water is starting to cover the path. But they don't want to pay for the boat taxi back. So a last few decide to wade through the water.

Staff from a youth program asked if we would collect some critters - we agreed and collected nudibranchs, crabs, and a scallop. The current was pulling the whole time but this was a fun dive!

🦑 📷

The many eyes of sea scallop. These eyes can detect light and movement, but this one was OK with us snapping some pictures. The parent wasn't around to confirm for sure, but I believe these are the eggs of a Sea Lemon (Doris pseudoargus) Sea vase tunicate - these creatures pull water in one opening and out the other, filtering out small food items from the water in the process. There were so many different nudibranch eggs on this dive. Not sure who these belonged to.
