La Seine et la défense au lointain, avec ciel lourd de nuages et de pluie

Sunrise this morning, May 3rd, from Buck Hill! A very foggy morning, that obscured the sun crossing the horizon, but made for some spectacular colors as the light broke through. About ten minutes after shooting this sunrise sequence, the fog would roll in even thicker, lowering visibility to a few hundred yards.

Last weekend’s post-hike hop over to Goblin Valley for the surreal landscape of mushroom-shaped hoodoos

Photograph of a valley crowded with round-topped, red rock hoodoos, short columnar formations left by erosion. Photograph of a standalone red rock hoodoo backed by a connected row of hoodoos all with similar striations at the same level showing the layers of the rock formation and erosion. Photograph of a cluster of connected red rock hoodoos with one standout one taller than the rest topped with a large boulder that’s much wider than the column below. Photograph of a run of red rock hoodoos leading out to a few disconnected clusters, some casting deep shadows in the bright sunlight.

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on April 10, 2025

Some of the camera settings I used to make this photo are at: https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2025Apr19_birds_and_cats/2025apr10_bluejay_IMG_3281c.html

A Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) was standing in spring vegetation with crest lowered and tail raised in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on April 10, 2025.

Stayed in the Saxon Switzerland National Park the last two days, took some photos with me... Sadly lots of shots in broad daylight but I think this one still worked out nice.

This photo shows the dramatic rock formations of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany. Towering, weathered sandstone cliffs rise from a lush green forest, with scattered trees even growing from crevices in the rock. The sky is a rich blue with scattered cumulus clouds and faint contrails, suggesting clear spring or early summer weather.

In the foreground, two rock climbers rest on a large boulder, adding a sense of scale to the immense landscape. Behind them, the rugged vertical cliffs and pillar-like rock formations dominate the scene, resembling natural fortresses. The background stretches into rolling hills and patchwork fields, giving a sense of depth and openness.

A dreamy photograph of the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. Limestone stacks emerge from the misty ocean, with smooth waves lapping at the sandy shore, framed by dramatic cliffs under a pastel sky with soft clouds. A watermark reading "Sandner Art & Photography" is visible in the bottom left corner.

Daisy

In a desert of stone
and rubble and dust,
a tiny sprout breaks through
the thick crust of rust.

Stand tall, my daisy —
stand tall.

A little daisy blooms from between the cracks in stone steps that are covered in sand and flecks of rust. Potsdam, 1 May 2025. Nikon D5600, Nikkor DX 35 mm ƒ1.8G, ISO 100, -0.3 ev, ƒ5, 1/1000s

Brandywine Falls Provincial Park, British Columbia – An Autumn Gem en Route to Whistler

Just off the scenic Sea to Sky Highway, about 20 minutes south of Whistler, Brandywine Falls Provincial Park offers a perfect autumn stop that’s as breathtaking as it is easy to access. In fall, the park becomes a quiet sanctuary of color and mist—maples and aspens glow in shades of gold and crimson, contrasting beautifully with the dark evergreens and the deep basalt cliffs of the gorge.

The short, well-maintained trail to the main viewpoint (just 15–20 minutes from the parking lot) leads through a peaceful forest before opening up to a dramatic sight: Brandywine Falls plunging 70 meters (230 feet) into a cavernous canyon carved by time and water. In autumn, recent rains often boost the volume of the waterfall, and the cool, crisp air makes the experience especially invigorating.

Beyond the falls, you can continue along the trail to views of Daisy Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges—often dusted with early snow by mid to late fall. Photographers, hikers, and nature lovers will find the park to be a quick but unforgettable detour on the way to Whistler.
