Why Shoot In Black and White

Short in Jerusalem near the Wall, and converted to black and white specifically for this article.

The EXIF data says I shot this in 2006 with a Nikon D200 with a 105mm f2 lens. Certainly I took several shots of this man and was surprised how he accepted that I was photographing him quite close up.

So now to the question of why shoot in black and white. There’s got to be a why.

When colour is available, why shoot in black and white or convert a colour image to black and white?

1. Ansel Adams

“I can get a far greater sense of ‘color’ through a well-planned and executed black-and-white image than I have ever achieved with color photography.”

— Ansel Adams, American landscape photographer

2. Henri Cartier-Bresson

“To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression… Color weakens, in a certain sense, this organic unity.”

— Henri Cartier-Bresson, pioneer of street and candid photography

3. Ted Grant

“When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!”

— Ted Grant, Canadian photojournalist and medical photographer – one of Canada’s most accomplished and prolific photojournalists with 280,000 images in the National Archives of Canada and another 100,000 images in the National Gallery of Canada’s Museum of Contemporary Photography.

4. Peter Lindbergh

“Black-and-white photography erases time from the equation.”

— Peter Lindbergh, fashion photographer

5. Robert Frank

“Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.”

— Robert Frank, documentary photographer, author of The Americans

6. Bill Brandt

“I think a good picture is one that tells a story. Black and white can help to eliminate distractions and allow the viewer to focus on what really matters.”

— Bill Brandt, experimental photographer and portraitist

What Have I Learned From These Quotes

What have I learned? I have Robert Frank’s book ‘The Americans’ and I regard him highly. He doesn’t look for those intersections of things that make a photograph funny or bizarre like some photographers do. His intent is too serious for that.

Now reading his quote, he sure knew how to make a big pronouncement. I had no idea he was that way inclined until reading his quote.

So, is there anything more or better in the B&W version than in this original colour version?

Maybe there is more of a sense of rest because the tonal range is much narrower in black and white.

Another Subject

Here’s a man standing isolated from other people. What is his demeanour, his expression? Is he pensive, is he waiting for someone? Do we get more from the photo when it is in B&W than when it is in colour? Perhaps we get more when it is in colour.

some macro fun in the forest🌿

The macro image shows a wooden stump completely covered with light brown-greem moss and some small flowers with beautiful butterfly wing-shaped leaves. In the center of the picture is a small delicate flower with white petals (on which a tiny insect is sitting). The macro image shows the same wood stump with the same white flower in the center (still with the small insect), but with more green moss and more flowers The macro image shows the forest floor with lush green moss - which is somewhat shaped like small branches of conifers - and a fallen brown leaf.

Heutige mit @fabiscafe war gut. Hat Spaß gemacht, vorallem weil ich schon lange kein mehr gefahren bin. Waren entspannte 40km.
